The initial training for individuals and families interested in sharing their homes includes:

  • Overview of autism
  • Abuse and neglect prevention and reporting
  • CPR, first aid and infection control
  • Interacting with families
  • Language and communication needs
  • Medical emergency procedures
  • Positive behavioral supports

The initial licensing of a shared living home includes home visits by Benhaven’s Shared Living Coordinator and the Department of Developmental Services.

These visits encompass:

  • Extensive initial interviews
  • A check of physical and fire safety requirements
  • Annual criminal record checks
  • Enrollment into the medicaid waiver program
  • Obtaining 3 references and reference checks
  • An initial home study profile
  • A certificate of health from a physician
