Shared Living

This service, loosely modeled on foster care-type service, offers individuals the warmth and richness of a family home in the community. Individuals are provided the support and services necessary to grow their life skills and succeed in meeting their personal goals.  Benhaven is continuously seeking individuals or families who will open their home and their hearts, sharing their home and community life with a person with developmental disabilities.

The Shared Living Program at Benhaven was developed in the late 1980s, when the leadership team saw that there was a need for some of the people they serve to be in a more typical family home environment. The Benhaven team provides training and support services, and ensures that each family has the support they need to provide a great home for the individuals. In addition, the Department of Development Services licenses each home to ensure that the home itself meets the needs of the individual.

“They listen to me even when I tell a lie and we fix problems. They stand up for me when I need help. Their kids are fun, silly and sometimes a little naughty. I like to go home on weekends and this is my second home.”
