Shared Living

Loosely modeled off of a foster care-type program, the Shared Living Program seeks individuals or families to share their warmth, the richness of their home, and their community life with a person with developmental disabilities.

The Shared Living Program at Benhaven was developed in the late 1980s, when the leadership team saw that there was a need for some of the people they serve to be in a more typical family home environment. Benhaven provides training and support through their shared living coordinator, and ensures that each family has the support they need to provide a great atmosphere for the individuals served by the program. In addition, the Department of Development Services licenses each home in the program to ensure that the home itself meets the needs of the program.

“They listen to me even when I tell a lie and we fix problems. They stand up for me when I need help. Their kids are fun, silly and sometimes a little naughty. I like to go home on weekends and this is my second home.”
