Dan Mulry Retires After 41 Years of Service to Benhaven

Dan Mulry arrived at Benhaven in 1980 and has made it his home since that time (quite literally in his earlier years, living on campus).  He started managing Baker House in 1984 with some of our earliest residents (Ben, Sang and Meyer).  Then he moved on to managing Rosenberg House after it was built in 1985 and added Leila, Daniel and Sid to the crew.  They are still living together today in no small part because of the rigorous and stable program Dan created.

Dan took our founder Amy Lettick’s words to heart when she said “I want Ben and all the residents to be lifelong learners” as she was herself.  Doing so led to him establishing an adult academic program that grew to encompass all of the residents at Rosenberg despite their various learning challenges.  In 1992, Dan established a relationship with North Haven Highschool and created Rosenberg House’s tutor program, which started with two students working with two residents.  This program blossomed into a highly successful community outreach program which at times has seen 50 students a week coming to the house and teaching and socializing with all six of the residents.

Having anchored Rosenberg’s routines on health, fitness, diet, academics, community presence and stable and predictable schedules, Dan Mulry built the program to last.  He’ll be remembered for his unwavering advocacy for the residents and for their families.  We at Benhaven are grateful for 41 years of service.
