In the early 70’s, the Autism Society of America launched a national effort to promote autism awareness and to ensure that people with autism have the same opportunities to be successful and the best quality of life possible. In December 2007, the United Nations General Assembly set April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day. The intent was to spread awareness of autism and promote the rights of people with autism.
Originally, known as Autism Awareness Month, the title was changed in 2021 to Acceptance Month.
Christopher Banks, President and CEO of the Autism Society of America, says: “While we will always work to spread awareness, words matter as we strive for autistic individuals to live fully in all areas of life. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system.”
Since 1967, Benhaven and its employees have been devoted to supporting individuals with autism and have grown from a school to an agency that serves people of all ages with diverse needs. Benhaven is known for their expertise, quality of services and dedication to both individuals and their families.
It is important to Benhaven to not only support individuals with autism but to celebrate their different strengths and the contributions individuals with autism make to their families and communities. Through their efforts, they have become part of the core of their communities. Their achievements, unique talents and skills, perspectives, and outlook help those around them to expand their acceptance of people with autism, recognizing that each person is an individual who hopes to be respected and valued.
Benhaven has assisted individuals with autism for over 55 years to be respected and included in their communities. Our job is not finished nor our vision fully realized. During Autism Acceptance Month we pledge to continue our work and through our efforts make community involvement, employment and life satisfaction a reality for the individuals we serve.
